What began as an ordinary evening errand ended in a chilling and unexpected death, after a 50-year-old married man was discovered lifeless under mysterious circumstances, hours after quietly leaving his home without raising any suspicion.
The man had informed his wife that he was stepping out to do casual work with a friend, a routine explanation that did not trigger concern. However, it later emerged that his actual movements told a very different story.
Reports indicate he spent part of the evening drinking and socialising with friends before heading to another woman’s residence later that night, where he reportedly intended to spend the night.
Authorities say he had agreed to help guard harvested maize at the woman’s home, a common arrangement in rural areas where farmers often stay overnight to protect their produce from theft.
Investigators have revealed that during the evening, the man was given a separate locally brewed drink. It remains unclear what the drink contained or whether it had any connection to his sudden death.
As the night wore on, his friends eventually left, but he chose to remain behind. The situation took a tragic turn in the early hours while he was still at the homestead.
At around 2am, the woman reported being awakened by unusually loud snoring. When she attempted to wake him, he failed to respond, prompting her to raise alarm.
The village headman was alerted and quickly contacted both the man’s relatives and the police. Officers who arrived at the scene found him seated but completely unresponsive.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind more questions than answers. His body has since been moved to a mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
The incident has stirred speculation within the community, as investigators work to determine whether alcohol, possible poisoning, or an underlying medical condition led to his sudden death.
