Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has formally announced plans to vie for the Senate seat in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for a new political chapter after completing his gubernatorial term.

Kahiga said his decision was informed by sustained calls from residents across Nyeri County who have urged him to continue serving them at the national level.

Speaking during a public forum, the governor noted that consultations with grassroots leaders and ordinary wananchi played a central role in shaping his next political move.

“After listening to the people of Nyeri, they are saying I should run for the Senate seat in 2027,” Kahiga stated, affirming he is ready to heed their call.

He argued that his tenure as governor has given him first-hand experience on the challenges facing devolved units, including funding gaps, policy delays and oversight weaknesses.

Kahiga said transitioning to the Senate would place him in a stronger position to defend devolution and push for increased allocation of resources to counties.

The governor emphasized that his focus remains on ensuring service delivery during his remaining time in office, noting that development projects will not be slowed down by early political campaigns.

Political analysts say Kahiga’s declaration could significantly influence the race, given his visibility, networks and established support base within the county.

They note that the Senate contest in Nyeri is likely to attract other strong candidates, setting up a competitive battle for the influential seat.

Kahiga’s entry also signals early political realignments, as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 polls, barely a year after the last General Election cycle stabilized.

Residents interviewed in different parts of the county expressed mixed reactions, with some backing his bid while others called for a focus on completing ongoing projects.

The Senate plays a critical role in oversight of county governments, lawmaking and protecting the interests of counties, making the seat highly contested in politically active regions.

Kahiga maintained that his ambition is rooted in public service, insisting he will continue engaging constituents before making further steps toward the 2027 race.

His announcement now shifts attention to potential rivals and alliances that could emerge as Nyeri’s political landscape gradually heats up.
