Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud has cautioned Kenyans against participating in what he termed illegal protests planned for Tuesday, April 21, within the Central Business District.

Speaking on Friday, April 17, Mohamud stressed that while the Constitution protects the right to peaceful assembly, such demonstrations must strictly comply with established legal procedures.

He noted that police had not received any formal notification from organisers regarding the planned protests, a legal requirement before any public gathering is held in the city.

According to Mohamud, failure to notify authorities in advance renders any demonstration unlawful, regardless of the issues being raised by participants.

The warning comes amid growing public frustration over the rising cost of living, particularly following recent increases in fuel prices that have triggered a ripple effect across the economy.

Kenyans have expressed concern over escalating transport fares, food prices, and the overall cost of basic commodities, which many say are becoming increasingly unaffordable.

Despite the police directive, a section of citizens has insisted that the demonstrations will proceed as planned, citing the urgency of the economic hardships they are facing.

Some organisers argue that the current economic pressure leaves them with no alternative but to take to the streets to demand government intervention.

The situation sets up a potential confrontation between authorities and protesters, raising concerns about public order and the possibility of disruptions within the capital’s busiest commercial hub.

Security agencies have urged the public to remain law-abiding and avoid actions that could lead to arrests or endanger lives and property during the planned demonstrations.
