Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has signalled the possibility of closer cooperation with opposition figures aligned to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview on Inooro FM on Tuesday, May 5, Sifuna indicated that leaders within the ODM-linked Linda Mwananchi platform are open to forming a broad alliance aimed at uniting the opposition. He said discussions are ongoing and will focus on aligning priorities, values and policy direction before any formal decision is made.
Sifuna emphasised that the group’s main objective is to consolidate support and present a strong alternative to President William Ruto. According to him, fragmented opposition bids could split votes and weaken the chances of unseating the incumbent in the next election.
“We are supposed to give Kenyans hope that we as like-minded political leaders do everything possible to remove Ruto from office,” he said. “Even if it means forming one large coalition and having a single candidate, that is a discussion we must have.”
The senator noted that any potential coalition would require structured talks among leaders to determine shared goals, governance priorities and commitments on key issues such as corruption and accountability. He added that agreement on a common agenda would be critical before settling on a joint presidential candidate.
Sifuna also cautioned that multiple candidates pursuing the presidency under a similar platform could hand an advantage to the incumbent, making unity a strategic priority for opposition leaders.
His remarks come at a time when political realignments are beginning to take shape ahead of 2027, with various leaders positioning themselves and exploring coalition options that could influence the outcome of the race.
